Sophilia Hipps

ORANGEBURG, SC – Corin Adams tossed in 19 points, including four free throws in the final 28 seconds, to lift visiting Morgan State to a 62-59 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference win over South Carolina State Monday night at Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center.

Despite having three players in double figures, led by Sophilia Hipps' 18 points, the Lady Bulldogs dropped their third straight contest to slip to 5-16 overall and 2-7 in the MEAC.

Also in double figures for Coach Doug Robertson's Lady Bulldogs were Marie Reid and Shontavius Wiley with 14 each. Hipps, Wiley and Reid, all contributed 10 rebounds in the loss for SC State, which enjoyed a 51-47 edge on the glass.

The Lady Bulldogs edge on the boards and in shooting percentage (42 percent to 29 percent) was negated by 20 turnovers to just 11 for Morgan State. Three of the Lady Bulldogs turnovers came in the final 30 seconds and led to all four free throws by Adams.

Adams, for the Lady Bears, was supported by Erin Hawkins and Brittany Dodson with 12 points each in the victory. Adams and Barber also had eight boards each for Morgan State, which climbed to 14-9 and 6-4 in the MEAC.

The Lady Bulldogs took a 27-19 lead to the locker room and was still ahead by six, at 41-36 with 13:30 to play when Hawkins nailed a 3-pointer and Adams followed with a reverse layup and a 3-pointer of her own to spark a 12-3 run that put the visitors ahead 48-44 with 8:49 remaining.

The Lady Bears led by five, 55-50, with 5:57 to play before SC State battled back with a 9-3 run to take a 59-58 lead on Hipps' 3-pointer with 1:35 left on the clock.

After a Morgan miss on the other end, SC State had a chance to go ahead by three but Reid, who had gotten open inside, missed a layup and the Lady Bears rebounded.

Adams as fouled on the other end and made both opportunities to give Morgan a 60-59 advantage with 32.3 seconds left. SC State turned the ball over on the inbound pass and Morgan was fouled once more and cashed both ends of a one-and-one for the final margin.

The Lady Bulldogs return to action Saturday when the host Hampton in the first game of an MEAC doubleheader, beginning at 2 p.m.
